Conway to retire after Monza WEC finale with title in reach
Mike Conway will end his professional driving career at Monza this weekend, with the chance to add a third world title to his record. The Toyota driver confirmed his retirement before the penultimate round at Barcelona, after a career that took him from single-seaters, including British Formula 3, GP2 and IndyCar, to the top of endurance racing. He has two Le Mans 24 Hours victories and two FIA WEC World Drivers' Championships to his name.
Conway said the decision was made well before the end of the season, and that he had been holding it in since the start of the year. He described sportscar racing as the place where he felt most at home, and praised Toyota as a great team and manufacturer. His Le Mans win with Toyota this year helped keep him and his teammates in the #7 car in contention for the 2026 Drivers' Championship.
The #7 crew trail the #8 car of Sebastien Buemi, Ryo Hirakawa and Brendon Hartley by 17 points, with a maximum of 26 on offer for a win and pole. Conway said he would love to win the title, adding that the final race would be pretty tense.
