Williams leads tributes to 1980 world champion Alan Jones
Williams has led tributes to former Formula 1 world champion Alan Jones, who died on 5 November following a short illness. Jones was the first Williams driver to win the drivers' world title, in 1980, and the second Australian to do so behind Sir Jack Brabham.
Jones won 12 Grands Prix during his Formula 1 career from 1975 to 1986. After retiring from F1 he raced mainly in the Australian Touring Car Championship. His wife, Amanda Butler-Davis, announced the news through Motorsport Australia.
Williams described him as a fast, uncompromising racer with a challenger mentality, saying he was instrumental in making the team what it is today. Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali called him a true great of the sport and an extraordinary racer.
