Brundle says Russell must find extra pace to challenge Antonelli in 2027
Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle believes George Russell must find a higher level next season if he is to challenge Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli and revive his championship ambitions. Russell had been expected to lead the team after outperforming Antonelli in 2025, but Antonelli has won nine races to Russell's three and secured the title with four rounds remaining, becoming Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion.
Brundle said Russell had been unlucky, but argued the key issue is that he has not matched Antonelli's consistent pace, particularly over the second half of tyre stints. He suggested the setback could either break Russell or prompt him to find a new gear, stating that he "has either got an overdrive or it's game over".
Antonelli, a Mercedes junior since the age of 12, has progressed from an occasionally error-prone rookie to a title winner, with standout victories in Monaco, Monza and Austin. Brundle said managing the pressure of being champion will be crucial to his longevity.
