Boutsen wins drenched 1989 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide
Thierry Boutsen secured his second Formula 1 victory for Williams at the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide in 1989. The race was run in appalling weather, and Alain Prost retired after just one lap. Of the 25 starters, 13 drivers crashed out, including early leader Ayrton Senna, who collided with Martin Brundle's Brabham.
With cars spinning off on both sides of the track, race director decided to bring the field back to the pits eleven laps before the scheduled finish. Lotus driver Nelson Piquet criticised the decision to keep racing, saying: "This is a dangerous sport which does not need to be made more dangerous. There is a difference between bravery and stupidity."
