Kimi Antonelli praised by F2 CEO after becoming F1's youngest drivers' champion
Kimi Antonelli became Formula 1's youngest drivers' champion at the Mexico City Grand Prix, aged 20 years and 68 days, beating Sebastian Vettel's 16-year-old record by more than three years. He is also the first Italian to win the title in 73 years.
Bruno Michel, CEO of FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3, who oversaw Antonelli's single campaign in the support paddock, welcomed the result. He described it as great news for motor racing and Formula 1, saying Antonelli is young and a nice person, and that the reaction from drivers, team principals and others had been one of shared happiness.
Michel said the celebrations after the race were emotional. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem also sent a congratulatory message to the champion, and Michel echoed his sentiments.
