Brundle says Russell must find more speed to challenge Antonelli at Mercedes

Martin Brundle has said George Russell must find an extra gear to beat new Formula 1 drivers' champion Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes, describing the coming season as a critical point in Russell's career. Russell was widely expected to win his first title in 2026, but Antonelli, who is 20 and in his second season, took five consecutive grands prix and won the championship, making him F1's youngest champion.

Brundle said the main issue for Russell was his inability to match Antonelli's consistent pace, particularly in the second half of tyre stints. He suggested the defeat could either make or break Russell, adding that Russell would need to lift his performance next year if he is to beat Antonelli.
