Antonelli becomes youngest F1 world champion after Mexico City podium
Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest Formula 1 world champion, in only his second season of grand prix racing. His third place finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix was enough to secure the title, breaking Sebastian Vettel's record from 2010 by a margin of over three years.
Antonelli is the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, and the 36th driver to be crowned F1 champion. He is only the fifth driver to win their first title in their first or second season, following Juan Manuel Fangio, Jacques Villeneuve, Lewis Hamilton and Giuseppe Farina.
Antonelli took the title in his 43rd grand prix start, which places him 13th on the list for the fewest races before a first title. Fangio holds the record for the fewest starts before a championship, at 13.
