Alan Jones, 1980 Formula 1 champion with Williams, dies aged 80

Source: The Race · · added 1 hour ago

Alan Jones, who has died aged 80, is remembered as an archetype of the perfect racing driver for Frank Williams and Patrick Head. He helped put the Williams team on the map, and the pair formalised that status by winning the 1980 drivers' and constructors' world titles together.

Jones arrived in Britain from Australia in 1970 with little money and was a frontrunner in British F3 and Formula Atlantic for several seasons. His route into Formula 1 ran through Graham Hill's team, a ride with Hesketh, and a spell with John Surtees in 1976. He then stepped in at Shadow after Tom Pryce's fatal accident in the 1977 South African Grand Prix, winning the wet Austrian Grand Prix that year.

Frank Williams signed Jones for the 1978 season, and the pairing went on to dominate the latter half of 1979 and the 1980 season. Described as superficially polite but terrifying to rivals once the helmet went on, Jones was known for his aggressive wheel-to-wheel racing.
