WRT BMW to run Zanardi tribute livery at WEC Monza finale

Source: Sportscar365 · · added 1 hour ago

The No. 32 WRT BMW M4 GT3 EVO will carry a special tribute livery to Alex Zanardi for the FIA World Endurance Championship season-ending 6 Hours of Monza. The idea came from Augusto Farfus, a longtime friend and competitor of Zanardi. The design, created by Vanuf Art Design, depicts Zanardi's face and a mural of the hand-cycle that took him to four Paralympic gold medals.

Zanardi lost both legs in a crash in the CART race at the Lausitzring in 2001 and later raced in touring car and GT competition with BMW. He died in May at the age of 59, following complications from a hand-cycling accident in 2020. Darren Leung said the team wanted to honour his resilience and determination, describing him as an inspirational figure.

Farfus, who raced alongside Zanardi in WTCC and at the 2019 Rolex 24 at Daytona, said the car was a way to pay tribute to him at Monza. Leung also said the team was looking to have pineapple stickers made for their helmets, a nod to the nickname Zanardi earned in his CART days.
