Payne takes Sandown 500 pole after messy Top 10 Shootout
Matt Payne claimed pole position for the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 Top 10 Shootout for Grove Racing, the only driver not to change position from session to session. Tickford Racing's Cameron Waters finished second after climbing two positions, with Dick Johnson Racing's Brodie Kostecki third.
Last year's champion Chaz Mostert had a difficult session. He missed the apex of the Turn 6 chicane, was cast wide through Turn 7, and ended up in the gravel trap after locking up at Turn 9. Mostert said the balance shifted too much on the streaming wet track, and he chose not to risk the fence, saying he would see what the car could do in the afternoon.
Triple Eight's Will Brown climbed from ninth to fourth on the back of his rivals' errors, while teammate Broc Feeney qualified fifth. Race 1 gets underway at 3:30pm AEDT.
