Payne fastest in Sandown 500 qualifying

Matt Payne set the pace in qualifying for the Sandown 500, lapping in 1:08.4079s to head Dick Johnson Racing's Brodie Kostecki. Chaz Mostert's final lap lifted him from outside the top 10 into third for Walkinshaw TWG Racing.

Cameron Waters was fourth for Tickford Racing, with teammate Thomas Randle fifth and the highest-placed non-finalist. Broc Feeney, Anton De Pasquale, Will Brown and Cooper Murray completed the top 10. Zach Bates, recently re-signed by Matt Stone Racing, narrowly missed the Shootout by 0.0001s.

Payne and Mostert will not have their teammates alongside them in the top 10, with Kai Allen last and Ryan Wood 12th. Allen's session included an off-track moment at the Turn 2 and 3 chicane and a spin. The Top 10 Shootout begins at 12:05pm AEDT.
