Komatsu calls Camara's Sao Paulo debut promotion a tough decision

Source: Formula1.com · · added 14 minutes ago

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has said that promoting Rafael Camara into the race seat earlier than expected at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix was a tough decision. Camara had been due to make his first practice appearance in a current car with Ferrari, a planned step towards his Haas race debut next season. The sudden departure of Esteban Ocon gave the team the opportunity to bring his debut forward to his home race at Interlagos.

Komatsu said the choice was not straightforward, particularly because Ryo Hirakawa had performed well when called upon at short notice in Mexico City, where he claimed P10. Komatsu praised Hirakawa's professionalism and preparation, noting that he had been ready when the news came. He said that from the outside the decision might look simple, given the signing for next year, but it was not.

Komatsu acknowledged there are both pros and cons to giving Camara an early start with minimal preparation, especially with the added attention of racing in Brazil. He said he was confident the young driver could cope, having seen how he handled the Portimao testing of previous cars shoot-out that won him the 2027 race seat.
