Hirakawa scores championship point on Haas debut in Mexico City
Ryo Hirakawa made his Formula 1 debut at the Mexico City Grand Prix after being drafted into Haas at short notice to replace Esteban Ocon. The Japanese driver started 19th on the grid following qualifying, and a penalty for Liam Lawson moved him up one place.
He finished 13th on the road, but post-race time penalties for Oscar Piastri, Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly elevated him to tenth, earning a championship point. Hirakawa said his priority had been to finish and learn, admitting the opening lap was difficult. He reported that a Safety Car period and the switch to the C5 compound gave him more confidence, allowing him to pass two cars.
Haas have not yet confirmed their driver line-up for the Brazilian Grand Prix, and Hirakawa's future with them remains uncertain. He is also due to return to his World Endurance Championship commitments with Toyota.
