Camara crashes in qualifying at home Sao Paulo Grand Prix
Rafael Camara crashed during the second qualifying session ahead of his home grand prix in São Paulo, bringing out a red flag. Camara is set to replace the axed Esteban Ocon at Haas on a permanent basis next season, having been given the opportunity by the team for the race at Interlagos.
Haas had drafted in Ryo Hirakawa for the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend after team principal Ayao Komatsu decided Ocon would not continue following Friday's practice session. Camara had performed well in treacherous conditions to reach Q2, but aquaplaned off the circuit at the fast Junçao corner. Unable to slow the car on the grass, he buried the nose of his Haas into a barrier.
Earlier in Q1, fellow Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto also went off at Junçao and spun into the same barrier, damaging the rear wing on his Audi and forcing him to retire.
