Norris takes pole for Sao Paulo GP after rain-hit qualifying
Lando Norris claimed pole position for the São Paulo Grand Prix after qualifying was dominated by torrential rain. Q1 was red-flagged after just two and a half minutes, and there was then an 82-minute delay while FIA race control waited for conditions to ease.
When the session resumed, Norris was the quickest when it mattered most, beating George Russell's Mercedes to top spot. Kimi Antonelli qualified third, but will start alongside Norris on the front row because Russell is serving a five-place grid penalty for his W17 taking a new internal combustion engine.
Norris said it was his first time driving the car in the wet and that he had figured it out quickly. He described the conditions as tough, with wet and intermediate tyres and strong wind on the final laps, and said it had been a good day for learning.
