Alan Jones remembered for talent and fiery character in Australia

Source: Speedcafe · · added 1 hour ago

Former Formula 1 world champion Alan Jones, who died on Thursday aged 80, is being remembered in Australian touring car circles for his local career. Jones made 19 Bathurst 1000 starts between 1981 and 2002, with podium finishes in 1988 and 1995, and five Australian Touring Car Championship race wins.

His first two wins came in 1993 at Symmons Plains, following a post-race pit lane exchange with Mark Skaife. Glenn Seton, who shared a team with Jones after he joined midway through 1992, recalled his outspoken nature and his ability to adapt quickly to different cars. Seton said Jones was almost unbeatable when motivated to race.

Seton described how Jones often arrived on race weekends while Seton handled the setup and development work on the team's five-litre V8 Falcon.
