Cameron's Sandown 500 car catches fire, cause still unclear
Cameron's Saturday race at Sandown ended dramatically on lap 14 when the #3 Liqui-Moly Blasht entry burst into flames. The driver pulled up at the inside of Turn 4, exited the car and activated the fire bomb at the base of the windscreen. Fire marshals brought the blaze under control, but the car suffered significant damage.
Engineer Daniel Veronese initially suggested an electrical fault may have caused the fire. Team boss Tim Blanchard, however, believes damage to the exhaust outlet triggered the chain of events, with the exhaust pushed in and catching the side skirt. Blanchard stressed that this was still an assumption and that the team would examine the car that night. Flames were seen beneath the left-rear quarter panel, bubbling the vinyl livery wrap.
Blanchard said the car had sustained a lot of damage and that the team would attempt repairs at the circuit rather than return to its Box Hill base, as all spares were on site. Teammate James Golding finished fifth in the sister CoolDrive entry.
