Azerbaijan GP: Official Starting Grid After Sainz and Perez Penalties

Azerbaijan GP: Official Starting Grid After Sainz and Perez Penalties

Qualifying gave us one story. The stewards gave us another. By the time every penalty had been bolted onto Friday's times, the grid for Saturday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix looked meaningfully different from what the timing screens suggested, and nobody came out of it worse than Carlos Sainz.

Russell's Pole Stays Untouched, but the Places Behind Him Do Not

George Russell starts from pole, and nothing about that changes with the paperwork. The rest of the top eight holds too: Charles Leclerc second, Oscar Piastri third, Isack Hadjar fourth on his return from injury, Lando Norris fifth, Lewis Hamilton sixth, Pierre Gasly seventh and Max Verstappen eighth. That is the entire top eight sitting exactly where Friday's times put them. The carnage starts from ninth back.

Sainz's Williams had genuinely quick pace in Baku, good enough for ninth on the road, his best qualifying result of the season by some distance. It lasted about as long as it took the stewards to review his conduct under yellow flags. A five-place penalty for failing to slow drops him to 14th, and Franco Colapinto inherits the place Sainz should have kept, sliding up to ninth ahead of Oliver Bearman in tenth.

Perez Stays Put, Which Somehow Makes It Worse

Sergio Pérez picked up a three-place penalty of his own for impeding Piastri during the first part of qualifying, but the punishment barely registers on the grid sheet. He qualified so far down the order that the penalty simply confirms him at P20 rather than dropping him further. There is a bleak kind of consistency to that. When your grid slot is already among the last of the field, stewarding you further back doesn't move the needle much.

Antonelli's Damage Limitation and the Number That Actually Matters

Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli starts 16th after clattering his Mercedes into the Turn 1 wall during Q1, an incident already covered in detail in our qualifying report. What matters more for Saturday is the gap he carries into it: an 81-point cushion over Russell heading into the race, built on a run of form that has seen him win two of the last four races. Starting from 16th is an inconvenience for a driver in that position, not a crisis, but it does hand Russell a rare shot to actually claw some of that lead back on merit rather than by attrition.

Aston Martin's Grid Penalties Go Nuclear

Nobody had a worse Saturday on paper than Aston Martin. Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll took on multiple power unit components and have been sent to the very back of the field as a result, occupying 21st and 22nd regardless of what they actually did on track. It is the kind of penalty that makes qualifying pace almost irrelevant, and it leaves Aston Martin's two cars starting behind both Cadillacs, both Audis and every other team on the grid. For a team sitting on 3 points in the constructors' championship, with 9 races still to run this season, that is not a one-off inconvenience so much as further confirmation of where 2026 has gone for them.
