Azerbaijan GP: Perez Drops to P20 After Stewards Rule He Impeded Piastri

Sergio Pérez cannot catch a break in Baku, and this time it is entirely his own doing. The Cadillac driver has been slapped with a three-place grid penalty after stewards ruled he impeded Oscar Piastri during Q1, a decision that shuffles him from an already-miserable P19 on the road down to P20 on the actual grid.

Baku had already delivered its share of drama before the stewards even opened this file. George Russell took a commanding pole position, while Kimi Antonelli suffered a costly Turn 1 exit in Q1. Pérez's issue is a smaller story in the grand scheme of a busy qualifying session, but for the man himself it is another entry in a season that refuses to give him anything.

What actually happened at Turns 18, 19 and 20

The incident itself is almost comically avoidable. Piastri was on a flying lap through Turns 18, 19 and 20 at the end of the lap, travelling at around 300kph, when he came up behind Pérez's Cadillac, which was crawling along at 248kph on what was meant to be a preparation lap. Stewards found that Pérez had been told twice that Piastri was closing in fast. He still did not get out of the way.

Race director instructions are clear that cars on prep laps must hold the right-hand side of the circuit. Pérez, by the stewards' own account, was instead weaving across the track to warm his tyres, which put him squarely in Piastri's path and forced the McLaren driver to lift off mid-lap. Piastri told the stewards he did not believe he lost any significant time as a result, which is the only mercy in this for Pérez, but it did not save him from a penalty. The stewards concluded the moment was not dangerous, but that the combination of two warnings, a breach of the positioning instructions, and a genuine impedance of Piastri's lap was enough to warrant action.

A three-place drop that barely moves the needle

Three places sounds like a slap on the wrist, and in isolation it would be. But Pérez's Saturday was already unravelling before the stewards got involved. Aston Martin's grid penalty chaos involving Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, both hit with back-of-the-grid engine penalties, means the bottom of the grid was always going to be reshuffled regardless of what the stewards decided about Pérez.

With both Aston Martins sent to the rear, Pérez's three-place drop effectively moves him from P19 on the road to P20 on the final grid, while his Cadillac teammate Valtteri Bottas swaps positions with him in the process. It is a penalty that changes very little in practical terms, given where Pérez was starting from anyway, but it adds another official black mark to a season that has produced zero points for the Mexican so far.

Not the only driver waiting on a verdict

Pérez was not the only man asked to explain himself to the stewards after the session. Carlos Sainz was also called in, with his Q3 effort of ninth potentially under threat over an alleged yellow flag infringement, a separate matter that could yet reshuffle the grid further before Saturday's race. Piastri, for his part, faced no sanction of his own; he was simply asked to give his version of events as the wronged party, a formality that cost him nothing beyond an inconvenient trip to the stewards' room after what was otherwise a strong session.

Another data point in a lost season

Pérez leaves Baku's qualifying day with zero points to his name this season and a stewards' verdict confirming he ignored two separate warnings about a car bearing down on him at 300kph.
