Antonelli crowned youngest F1 champion as Verstappen wins Mexico City GP

Source: RacingNews365 · · added 5 hours ago

Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest Formula 1 world champion after finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix, behind race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. At 20 years and 68 days old, the Mercedes driver surpasses Sebastian Vettel's previous record by three years. He is also the first Italian to win the drivers' title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

Ferrari had a difficult race. Hamilton and Charles Leclerc tangled on the opening lap, and Leclerc was handed a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Red Bull then brought in Verstappen to take the lead, which he held to the flag. Verstappen also set the fastest lap, having started fifth after a grid penalty.

George Russell's race ended poorly after an electrical deployment problem at the start, a collision with Isack Hadjar and a slow pit stop left him sixth. Ryo Hirakawa made his debut for Haas, earning a championship point after post-race penalties moved him up to 10th.
