Alan Jones, 1980 and 1981 F1 champion, dies aged 80
Australian driver Alan Jones, who won the Formula One world championship with Williams in 1980 and 1981, has died aged 80 after a battle with cancer.
Jones clinched the 1980 title by winning a tense Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. He was in his third season with Williams, having taken four race victories the year before. He benefited from the aerodynamic strength of the new Williams FW07, which used revolutionary ground effect technology introduced late in the 1979 season.
He was known for his blunt, unsentimental manner, and his 12 grand prix victories marked him out as one of the era's leading drivers.
