DJR explains Kostecki's grid penalty at Sandown
Brodie Kostecki was handed a drive-through penalty during the second Sandown semi-final after switching his engine off while rolling onto the grid. Supercars rules require the engine to keep running until the car has come to a complete stop, a safety measure given crew members are on the grid ahead of the race. The stewards' report noted his engine speed was at zero rpm for seven seconds as the car decelerated to a stop.
DJR team manager Tom Moore said the move was a misjudged attempt by Kostecki to save a little fuel, adding that many cars do the same. He said the breach was clear but was surprised by the severity of the penalty, which he felt was hefty given the lack of a performance advantage. Moore said the move was not premeditated and that the team could question the penalty's reasoning, although it did not change the result.
Kostecki started the race fourth before being sent to the back of the pack when he served the penalty.
