Russell angry at Mercedes after wet qualifying error
George Russell was left frustrated after his race engineer, Marcus Dudley, told him to abandon a lap in Q3 just as rain intensified. Russell had been on course to set the fastest time, but the team's plan to set him up for a faster lap on his next run was disrupted when the rain fell more heavily than expected, and his subsequent lap was slower. Team principal Toto Wolff tried to console him by noting he was second-fastest, but Russell replied that he wanted to be first.
Russell qualified second but will start seventh after a five-place grid penalty for an engine change. He said the session "sums up everything this season", though he added that he had felt more confident in the wet than in the dry, describing the challenge of aquaplaning at high speed with little visibility.
