Norris fastest in Interlagos FP1 as Russell takes grid penalty
Lando Norris topped the first practice session for the São Paulo Grand Prix with a time of 1m 11.717s, ahead of Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen. George Russell will start the race five places lower after fitting a new internal combustion engine, a setback for Mercedes on a weekend in which they could secure the constructors' title.
Several drivers stood in during the session. Dino Beganovic drove Charles Leclerc's Ferrari, Colton Herta took Sergio Pérez's Cadillac, and Rafael Câmara made his F1 debut for Haas, replacing Esteban Ocon at his home Grand Prix. Freddie Slater's session was cut short after seven laps when his Audi stopped on track with an apparent gearbox issue, causing a red flag.
Verstappen was unhappy with his gearshifts on the radio, describing them as unacceptable. Alex Albon retired from the session after his Williams lost power.
