Hamilton says lack of information led to pit call override in Sao Paulo
Lewis Hamilton has said a lack of information led him to override Ferrari's instruction to pit as rain fell late in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Hamilton was running eighth at Interlagos when heavy rain began with 10 laps to go, and he stayed out while team-mate Charles Leclerc came in.
Hamilton said he had been told the rain would stay the same and his grip felt good, so he was closing on Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson when he was asked to box. He said he realised it was wet as soon as he reached Turn 1 and would have come in had he known conditions were worsening. He took responsibility for the decision and apologised to the team.
Hamilton finished ninth, one place behind where he could have finished had he passed Lawson, and the race followed a difficult weekend for him and Ferrari after the clash with Leclerc in Mexico.
