Antonelli handed five-second penalty for unsafe release

Source: RacingNews365 · · added 49 minutes ago

Kimi Antonelli has received a five-second time penalty from F1 stewards for an unsafe release during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Mercedes released him into the path of Alpine's Franco Colapinto as the field headed for the pits in the closing stages to switch to intermediate tyres, forcing Colapinto to check up.

Antonelli still finished fifth, with Mercedes securing the constructors' title and George Russell fourth. Because he crossed the line 20.4 seconds ahead of Oscar Piastri in sixth, he kept his position, and the gap between them was reduced to 15.4 seconds after the penalty was applied.

Oliver Bearman was also given a five-second sanction for an unsafe release on Charles Leclerc, but it does not alter his 17th-place finish.
