Alonso takes Aston Martin into Q3 in wet Interlagos qualifying

Fernando Alonso took an Aston Martin into Q3 for the first time in 2026 during wet qualifying at Interlagos, a result the team needed after a difficult weekend in Mexico.

Alonso was one of the first drivers out on intermediate tyres in Q2 and moved up to third on the timing sheets, just 0.05 seconds off George Russell's benchmark, with around three and a half minutes of the session still remaining. Telemetry comparisons with Russell's time on full wet tyres show Alonso losing ground on the straights but gaining heavily through the slow Turn 6 to Turn 10 section, where he made up 1.2 seconds.

His first intermediate lap was enough to progress, and he improved again on his next run with a stronger exit from Turn 3.
