Watanabe questions Tsunoda's IndyCar test plans
Honda president Koji Watanabe has questioned why Yuki Tsunoda was considering testing for an IndyCar team, given that his goal is to rejoin the Formula 1 grid next season. Watanabe said he spoke with the Japanese driver just days before a reported one-day test with Meyer Shank Racing was due to take place.
Watanabe said Tsunoda and his management are free to decide his next steps, as the negotiations were between the driver's camp and Meyer Shank Racing rather than Honda. He added that he only learned after the fact that the test had been cancelled. He told Tsunoda, "Why not just do what you want? If you can stay in F1, that's best, and if not, let's talk again then."
Tsunoda, currently a reserve driver with Red Bull and Racing Bulls, has said Formula 1 remains his priority. He has also said he does not want to spend two years in the garage and that he will consider other series if he cannot find a seat for next year.
