Austrian GP 2026: Russell Wins, Verstappen Impressive in P2

George Russell won the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, but it was far from comfortable. Max Verstappen, starting fifth after his qualifying crash, carved through the field to make this a genuine fight, and for a while it looked like he might just pull it off.

Russell Keeps His Cool in the Heat

With temperatures baking the Red Bull Ring, George Russell led from pole and managed the race intelligently. His pace advantage over Verstappen in the closing laps was not comfortable, it was just enough. Verstappen, on fresher rubber and hunting hard, closed the gap to under two seconds before the flag. Russell went slightly wide at Turn 1 in the final stint and the team could feel the seat squirming, but he held on. His second win of the season and arguably his most important: Mercedes head to Silverstone with momentum restored after Ferrari ended their streak in Barcelona.

Verstappen: The Show-Stealer

Let us be honest, the best performance on Sunday came from the man who finished second. Verstappen climbed from fifth to third before the first pit stops, duelled magnificently with Lewis Hamilton in one of the race’s genuine highlights, and still had the pace to threaten Russell at the end. Red Bull rebuilt his car after Saturday’s crash and this is what they got for the effort. Not a win, but a very encouraging sign for a team that has looked lost for most of 2026.

Antonelli and the Championship Picture

Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third, but his lead in the championship has now shrunk to 40 points over Russell. A chaotic first couple of laps, running wide repeatedly and surrendering positions, cost him dearly. Two consecutive races where Russell has clawed points back: the teenager is still in front, but the pressure is mounting.

Ferrari Fade, Cadillac Catastrophe

Hamilton could only manage fifth despite an early tyre gamble on softs. Charles Leclerc finished a distant eighth, and Ferrari’s vaunted engine upgrade is looking rather less transformative than advertised. Cadillac had both cars retired inside five laps with brake fires. Both of them. At their title sponsor’s home race. Sometimes the sport writes its own jokes.
