Toto Wolff came out of the Hungarian GP swinging in every direction. Rivals, the marshalling system, his own engineers, and yes, Audi specifically, all got a piece of his mind. For a team that left Budapest with a podium, the Mercedes boss was anything but satisfied.
The Teletubbies Comment That Will Define This Weekend
When the FIA’s trackside light panel system failed during the race, drivers were left relying on manually waved blue flags and their own engineers for guidance. According to Wolff, some engineers simply did not bother.
“It’s just disgraceful from some of the Teletubbies engineers that sit on the pit walls of these teams, not telling the drivers what’s happening behind.” – Toto Wolff
He is not wrong. With Kimi Antonelli fighting for position in the closing laps, several lapped drivers held their ground as though they were disputing a championship of their own. Gabriel Bortoleto reportedly defended against George Russell, which Wolff described as “unbelievable.” He also aimed a pointed remark at Audi: when a Mercedes suddenly appears in your mirrors, a bit of basic awareness might be in order.
The chaos contributed directly to the Piastri-Sainz collision that wrecked McLaren’s afternoon and complicated the entire midfield picture.
Mercedes Shot Themselves in the Foot Too
To his credit, Wolff did not reserve all of his frustration for others. Russell’s race was effectively ruined before it had properly started, after an engine issue at the launch sent him plummeting to the back of the field.
“We did a mistake on screwing George’s start. It’s just not acceptable and not good enough from us.” – Toto Wolff
Russell hauled himself back to seventh, which under the circumstances was respectable. But Wolff pointed out the obvious: with a clean race, Mercedes could realistically have had two cars fighting for the podium. Instead, they took P3 and P7 home.
The VSC Curse Strikes Again
The Virtual Safety Car, deployed when Oscar Piastri retired, fell at the worst possible moment for Antonelli. Wolff noted this was the third or fourth time this season a VSC has landed squarely against Mercedes. At some point that starts to feel less like bad luck and more like a pattern worth solving.
The Silver Lining Wolff Can Barely Bring Himself to Mention
Antonelli holds a 50-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Mercedes leads Ferrari by 72 points in the Constructors’ standings heading into the summer break. Wolff acknowledged that before the season, he would have taken those numbers immediately.
But his summary of the first half of 2026 was characteristically blunt: “Fast and flawed.” That sums up a team quick enough to lead both championships despite a catalogue of self-inflicted wounds. Fix the errors, and they may be untouchable. Keep making them, and Ferrari will come knocking. Lando Norris winning in Hungary while Mercedes fumbled is a reminder that the competition is not standing still.
