Grid penalties have done what qualifying couldn’t: turned the Belgian GP starting order into something nobody actually earned. Kimi Antonelli starts on pole on merit, fair enough. Everything else below him? Thank the stewards.
Antonelli on Pole, Verstappen Gets a Present
Antonelli was simply the class of the field across the entire Spa weekend, and his sixth pole of 2026 was built on a 0.317-second margin over the rest. That is not a fluke. That is a driver in form. Alongside him on the front row sits Max Verstappen, who did nothing wrong but is hardly being tested by the grid slot he’s been handed.
The Norris Effect
Lando Norris set the third-fastest time in qualifying. In a just world, he starts P3. Instead, a ten-place grid penalty for power unit changes drops the reigning world champion to P13. The penalty was unavoidable, but the optics are brutal. The sport’s defending champion shuffling through the midfield while others inherit his hard work is not a great look.
The beneficiaries read like a random lottery: George Russell moves to P3, Charles Leclerc to P4, Lewis Hamilton to P5. Oscar Piastri gains a spot to P6. Everyone shuffles forward. Nobody earned it.
Midfield Movers
Arvid Lindblad lines up P7 for Racing Bulls, with Gabriel Bortoleto eighth for Audi. Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly complete the top ten. Nico Hulkenberg, whose qualifying was wrecked by technical gremlins, starts twelfth. Not an ideal preparation for a race weekend at a circuit that demands clean momentum from the off.
Isack Hadjar is buried at the back after his own power unit penalty, starting P21. The Belgian GP gets underway at 13:00 UTC, check the calendar for your local time.
The Bottom Line
Antonelli starts where he belongs. The rest of the grid is a bureaucratic reshuffle. Whether the race itself produces any real justice is another question entirely.
