Silverstone 2026 Starting Grid: Antonelli Pole, Penalties Hit Gasly and Stroll

Five races. Five poles. Kimi Antonelli is making qualifying look like a formality. The Mercedes teenager lines up at the front of the Silverstone grid for Sunday’s British Grand Prix, with two Ferraris sitting right behind him and a hobbled Max Verstappen watching the whole thing from seventh. The grid is set, and it is not short of storylines.

Antonelli Does It Again

Kimi Antonelli converted yet another qualifying session into another pole, extending Mercedes‘ perfect Grand Prix qualifying record in 2026. The pole lap itself raised eyebrows in the paddock, with rivals scrambling to understand exactly how the Silver Arrows keep finding lap time when it matters. Whatever the answer, the result is the same: Antonelli at the front, everyone else left to fight over scraps.

Ferrari’s Front Row and Hamilton’s Homework

Charles Leclerc grabbed P2 by edging out his own teammate Lewis Hamilton, who lines up third. On paper, Ferrari occupying row one alongside Antonelli represents the best chance yet of unseating Mercedes at the front. In practice, converting qualifying pace into race pace has been Ferrari’s recurring headache this season. Hamilton, chasing a record-extending tenth home win, will need his Ferrari to find something it perhaps did not have on Saturday. George Russell slots into P4 in the second Mercedes, left to wonder how his teammate keeps making it look easy.

Hadjar Puts Verstappen in His Place

The subplot Red Bull desperately wanted to avoid: rookie Isack Hadjar qualified fifth, a full two grid positions ahead of four-time champion Max Verstappen in seventh. Verstappen was blunt about the situation, admitting there was little point racing under these circumstances. Lando Norris splits the Red Bull pair in sixth. Oscar Piastri lines up eighth, with Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson completing the top ten for Racing Bulls.

Penalties Shuffle the Back End

Pierre Gasly takes a three-place grid penalty for impeding during qualifying and drops to fifteenth. The stewards were not sympathetic. Lance Stroll absorbs a ten-place drop for additional power unit elements, though given he only qualified twenty-first, the practical effect is simply that he starts last. At least he can enjoy the view from the back row alongside teammate Fernando Alonso, who for once in 2026 looks positively well-placed by comparison.

Race Start

The 2026 British Grand Prix gets underway at 14:00 UTC. Check the calendar for your local time.

Ferrari has the tools to make Antonelli uncomfortable off the line. Whether they have the race pace to back it up is the question that has gone unanswered all season. Until someone produces a genuine answer, expect to see that number twelve Mercedes in the lead when the lights go out.
