Norris Snatches Hungarian GP Pole from Hamilton by 0.012s

Twelve thousandths of a second. That is all that separates glory from heartbreak at the Hungaroring. Lando Norris delivered a stunning final lap in Q3 to snatch pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix from Lewis Hamilton, denying the seven-time champion a record-breaking tenth pole at this circuit. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen spun into a wall of mediocrity and George Russell simply stopped on track. Quite the Saturday afternoon.

The Pole That Almost Wasn’t

Hamilton looked every inch the Hungaroring king through the first runs of Q3. His 1:17.219 sat at the top of the timesheets and the circuit that has handed him eight victories appeared ready to gift him a ninth pole. Norris, by his own admission, was not even flying. “My Q3 laps were honestly not my best,” he said. “Even that final one didn’t feel perfect. I was genuinely surprised I was on top.”

And yet. Norris crossed the line at 1:17.207, 0.012 seconds quicker, and pole was his. Charles Leclerc completed the top three, 0.238 seconds back, with Kimi Antonelli fourth despite complaining of zero grip. The FP3 form that had hinted at McLaren pace duly translated into the session that matters.

Verstappen: From Contender to Spectator

Red Bull arrived in Budapest daring to hope. The Hungaroring was supposed to suit the RB22. Friday told a different story, and Saturday confirmed it brutally. Verstappen ended Q3 in sixth place after spinning at the final corner on his last lap, the moment rendering his effort entirely academic. Teammate Isack Hadjar had already spun in Q2. Red Bull are over half a second off the pace of the quickest cars here. That is not a setup tweak. That is a problem.

Russell: Still No Excuses Left

After Spa, Russell had a software bug to point at. Mercedes fixed it before Budapest. Russell still ended up seventh, then came to a complete stop on track during the final Q3 runs, triggering double yellows that finished off what remained of his qualifying session. The gap to Antonelli is now seven qualifying sessions to four in the young Italian’s favour, with an average margin of 0.136 seconds. At some point, the excuses run dry.

Bright Spots in the Midfield

Fernando Alonso reached Q2 for the first time in 2026 with the updated Aston Martin, a meaningful milestone for a team that has spent most of this season invisible. Arvid Lindblad out-qualified Liam Lawson for the third consecutive session, a trend that is starting to look rather permanent. Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top ten for Audi.

The Hungarian Grand Prix starts on Sunday at 13:00 UTC, check the calendar for your local time. Norris starts from the clean side of the grid, Hamilton alongside him on the dirty side. History favours the man on pole at the Hungaroring. Whether Hamilton can overturn that in the opening corners is the question that makes Sunday worth watching.
