A photo. A five-star hotel terrace. A private jet with Max Verstappen’s livery still on the fuselage. Welcome to the most theatrical power play of the 2026 silly season.
The Amsterdam Summit Nobody Is Pretending Was Casual
On Thursday, Jos Verstappen, Max Verstappen‘s manager Raymond Vermeulen, and former Red Bull supremo Helmut Marko were photographed together on the terrace of the Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium hotel in Amsterdam. The image was published by journalist Erik van Haren, a reporter with notably close ties to the Verstappen family. Quite the coincidence.
Flight records make the picture even more interesting. Max’s old private jet, still registered PH-DTF and still wearing his personal colour scheme, flew from Paris to Amsterdam on Wednesday, then made a second run on Thursday, this time departing from Graz, which happens to be where Helmut Marko lives. The four-time world champion’s family effectively sent a plane to collect his former mentor and bring him to a meeting his camp then made sure the world found out about.
Accidental Leak? Pull the Other One
Several observers have pointed out bluntly that this photo does not look like it was snapped by a passing tourist. The framing is too clean, the timing too convenient. The more credible reading is that someone in the Verstappen orbit wanted Red Bull’s management to open their morning news and feel very uncomfortable indeed.
“It’s obviously a staged ‘coincidental’ photo to make certain people nervous. Transparent game.” – F1 fan reaction
And the context gives that reading plenty of support. Verstappen’s exit clause activates if he cannot reach second in the standings by the summer break, and with 76 points against George Russell’s 154, that ship has sailed. McLaren and Mercedes are the teams most frequently linked with a move.
Palmer Adds a Twist: Norris, Not Piastri, Could Be the One to Go
Former Renault driver Jolyon Palmer has added fuel by suggesting it would not necessarily be Oscar Piastri making way at McLaren. A swap involving Lando Norris is, he argues, a realistic scenario. That will make for interesting reading in the Norris camp.
The Verdict
Nobody outside that Amsterdam hotel room knows what was discussed. But the Verstappen family has never been shy about using optics as leverage. Red Bull, already under pressure with zero wins this season, just got a very public reminder that their most valuable asset knows exactly how to make them squirm.
