Kimi Antonelli did not just claim pole position for the British Grand Prix. He completed a flawless Silverstone Saturday, having already won the sprint race earlier in the day. Fifth pole of the season. Sprint victory. All before dinner. The 100,000-odd Brits packed into the grandstands came looking for a home hero moment and got handed yet another Italian masterclass instead.
The 19-year-old Mercedes driver clocked a 1:28.111 in Q3 to beat Charles Leclerc by 0.175 seconds, with Lewis Hamilton a further 0.172 adrift in third. George Russell, Antonelli’s championship rival and the nominal home favourite, was a subdued fourth, 0.370 seconds off his own team-mate. Mercedes remain unbeaten in grand prix qualifying in 2026. Nine poles. Zero slip-ups.
“I was a bit stressed because I never really like going first for the last run. But the last lap was very tidy. It was very tricky with the wind because it was very gusty and unpredictable. But we built our way through qualifying, and to bring home pole is very satisfying.” – Kimi Antonelli
Russell’s Q1 Nightmare
The session’s most dramatic subplot belonged to Russell, who locked up at Luffield in Q1, skidded through the gravel and nudged the barrier hard enough to damage his front wing. He called it the strangest moment of his career at that corner. Mercedes pointed the finger at a rogue gust of wind. Whatever the cause, Russell was left in the drop zone with no timed lap on the board, facing an embarrassing early exit at his home race. The car was repaired, he made it through, and eventually reached fourth on the grid. But a 0.370-second deficit to Antonelli in Q3 is not a close title fight; it is a statement of intent. As we noted earlier this weekend, Toto Wolff had already flagged concerns about Russell’s mental state coming into this event. Saturday did nothing to ease them.
Verstappen and McLaren Both Struggle
Max Verstappen spent the afternoon radioing complaints about his power unit’s response and ended up seventh, beaten by team-mate Isack Hadjar in fifth, with Lando Norris splitting the two Red Bulls in sixth. Oscar Piastri was briefly in the Q2 drop zone before recovering to eighth. Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi came within 0.032 seconds of gatecrashing the top ten, which is either impressive or a damning indictment of how far McLaren and Red Bull currently are from the top two teams, depending on your mood.
What Happens on Sunday
Antonelli heads into the race with two Ferraris right behind him and he knows it. “I’ve got two Ferraris behind me and for sure they’re going to work together,” he said. Hamilton will be desperate to deploy whatever Silverstone magic has delivered him nine victories here previously. But Antonelli already passed him once today in the sprint, and that overtake looked routine. The British Grand Prix starts at 14:00 UTC on Sunday.
