Lewis Hamilton gave 150,000 home fans exactly what they wanted for seven laps. Then Kimi Antonelli took it away. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver overhauled his pole-sitting Ferrari rival on the Hangar Straight in lap eight of Saturday’s Silverstone Sprint, winning by 2.745 seconds and padding his championship lead to a very comfortable 43 points over George Russell.
Hamilton Had No Answer
Hamilton made a clean getaway and squeezed Antonelli to the inside at Abbey, holding the lead with enough authority to get the crowd buzzing. For the first seven laps, he had a buffer. It looked, briefly, like it might hold.
It didn’t. Antonelli had been biding his time, managing his battery with the patience of a driver twice his age. He probed once into Brooklands, Hamilton used his boost to slam the door shut, and Antonelli simply filed that information away. One lap later, on the Hangar Straight, there was a reported 26 km/h speed differential between the two cars. Hamilton was spent. Antonelli sailed past.

Hamilton, to his credit, acknowledged reality without dressing it up.
“Tough race to keep the Mercedes behind. With that big headwind down the back straight, he came flying past. We have work to do.” – Lewis Hamilton
Chaos Behind, Calm at the Front
While Antonelli and Hamilton were conducting a two-car breakaway, the battle for third was a spectacular mess. Lando Norris, George Russell and Max Verstappen swapped positions so frequently it was hard to keep up, with energy management dictating who had pace at which part of the circuit. Norris eventually emerged third, with Russell fourth and Verstappen a distant sixth after Charles Leclerc picked his pocket on lap ten. Not a great day for Red Bull.
At the back of the points, Liam Lawson grabbed eighth but faces a stewards’ investigation for moving under braking while defending from Isack Hadjar. Audi‘s Nico Hulkenberg, stuck in 13th, also faces the stewards for gaining an advantage off track. A vintage Saturday for the German marque, then.
Title Picture Gets Clearer
As Antonelli extends his lead to 43 points over Russell, with Hamilton another four back in third, the championship is starting to look like his to lose. He is younger than most of the paddock’s race engineers. He is already the youngest Sprint winner in Formula 1 history. And he has just broken Lewis Hamilton’s heart in front of Hamilton’s own crowd.
